Victoria and Albert Porter Gallery

The Victoria and Albert Porter Gallery, a recent addition to the V&A in London, is a contemporary exhibition space designed to accommodate the museum’s program for the next decade. With a transitional lobby entrance, it provides a seamless shift from the V&A proper to the contemporary program. The gallery features five seven-meter high rotating screens, clad in reflective black carbon fiber sheeting, which can be reconfigured to suit each exhibition’s curatorial needs. The structural intervention took advantage of the existing central lantern light, employing over three thousand one-millimeter cables to support the roof’s envelope. This innovative design enables the structural elements to be lightweight and slender, creating a captivating mist-like structure that hovers above the roof and offers a mesmerizing view from within the gallery.
